FAQ's
On our FAQ page, we've compiled answers to common questions about our sugaring services. If your question isn't covered, feel free to ask via our online chat or contact form.
-
How long does my hair need to be to get sugared?Around 4-5mm, or the length of a grain of rice. Hair growth varies per person but as a guide - it's about 4 to 5 weeks of growth after waxing/epilation or 2 weeks after shaving/removal cream.
-
Will sugaring reduce my hair growth over time?Certainly, regular sugaring sessions can gradually decrease hair growth. By extracting hair directly from the root, the follicle weakens, causing hair to grow back thinner and more sparsely. Some clients notice these changes as early as the first treatment, though for others, it might take a bit longer.
-
Is sugaring less painful than waxing?Certainly! Sugaring is generally considered less painful than waxing, as reflected in our client reviews. This is due to several key factors: sugaring paste is applied at body temperature, avoiding the risk of burns associated with hotter wax; it specifically targets dead skin cells and hair, sparing live skin cells and minimising discomfort; and it removes hair in its natural direction of growth, which is typically less painful. While most clients find sugaring more comfortable, pain tolerance varies, and a small number may find it more painful than waxing. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.
-
What areas can't be sugared?Sugaring is highly effective for many areas, but it is not suitable for the ears and nostrils. The warmth of these regions can cause the sugaring paste to melt, preventing it from adequately adhering to the hairs for effective removal.
-
Is sugaring the same as waxing?Sugaring is not the same as waxing, and many consider it a superior choice for hair removal, so much so that we often wonder why anyone would still choose waxing over sugaring! Our sugaring paste, crafted from natural ingredients like glucose, fructose, and water, is environmentally friendly and kinder to the skin, offering a clear advantage over the synthetic resins used in many waxes. Sugaring is gentler on the skin, adhering only to dead skin cells and hair, which means less discomfort and a lower risk of irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. The technique of removing hair in the direction of growth leads to fewer ingrown hairs and less breakage, resulting in smoother, more satisfying results. Overall sugaring offers a more natural, effective, and skin-friendly solution for hair removal.

How old do I need to be to get sugared?Sugaring is safe for any age! However at Secret Sugar Club, we prioritise creating a secure and welcoming environment for everyone who visits us. With this commitment in mind, we have established a specific age policy for our sugaring services: We welcome clients of all ages for most sugaring treatments, but please note that we do not offer any services to individuals under the age of 16. For Female Intimate sugaring treatments, we have a strict policy that clients must be at least 18 years old. We adhere to this policy without exception. To ensure adherence to our age policy, we may ask for government-issued identification to confirm the age of any client before proceeding with a treatment, regardless of apparent age. We understand that our age policy might be more cautious than some other establishments, but as a small growing business, we believe in taking extra steps to ensure the well-being and safety of our clients. We will look at relaxing this policy as we grow. This is all covered with-in our Age Policy. Should you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out to us.

How do I prepare for sugaring?Preparing for your sugaring appointment is straightforward and will help ensure the best possible results: Length of Hair: Ensure your hair is at least 4-5mm long, about the length of a grain of rice. This allows the sugaring paste to grip the hair effectively. Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate the area to be sugared 24-48 hours before your appointment. This removes dead skin cells and can help prevent ingrown hairs. Cleanliness: Bathe and cleanse the area on the day of your appointment. The skin should be free of oils, lotions, and deodorants to allow the sugaring paste to adhere properly. Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to keep your skin hydrated. Well-hydrated skin allows for easier hair removal. Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment to avoid irritation after sugaring, especially if you're getting a larger area treated. By following these simple steps, you'll be well-prepared for your sugaring session, contributing to a smoother process and optimal results.

What aftercare do I need to follow? To ensure the best results and maintain skin health after your sugaring treatment, follow these aftercare guidelines: Don'ts: For 48 hours post-treatment (or 24 hours if you're a regular with sugaring or waxing), avoid the following: Exfoliating the sugared area. Participating in activities that cause friction or sweating, such as exercise or intimate contact. Using UV tanning beds or spray tans. Swimming or using hot tubs. Applying any skincare products to the sugared area. Do's: Exfoliate the sugared area twice a week with a gentle exfoliant. Keep the area moisturized. Preparation for Next Appointment: Schedule sugaring every 4-6 weeks. Avoid shaving, tweezing, or epilating between appointments. Wear loose-fitting clothing, like breathable cotton underwear, especially after intimate area sugaring. For a tailored aftercare routine, Secret Sugar Club offers a range of gentle exfoliants and moisturisers suitable for post-sugaring care. For more details, please feel free to reach out to us. Remember, following these aftercare instructions is key to achieving the best results and keeping your skin looking and feeling great after your sugaring treatment.

Can I be sugared when I'm on my period?Yes, you can absolutely be sugared during your period. If you are having an intimate treatment, we ask that you use a fresh tampon or moon cup right before your appointment for hygiene purposes and to ensure your comfort. Keep in mind that sensitivity can be heightened during menstruation, so you may experience a slightly higher level of discomfort. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to make sure your experience is as comfortable as possible.
-
Is it safe to be sugared when pregnant?Yes, sugaring is safe during pregnancy. It is a natural, non-invasive hair removal method that's often considered a gentler alternative to waxing, which can be particularly beneficial as skin sensitivity often increases during pregnancy. It's important to be aware that if you're undergoing your first sugaring session, or it's been a while since your last hair removal, there's a heightened risk of irritation during the second and third trimesters. This irritation is typically a temporary response to hair being removed from the root, rather than a reaction to the sugaring products themselves. Please always let us know if you are pregnant on your consultation form - even in the early, nobody-else-knows stages. All information is treated with the utmost confidence and is essential to making sure you are comfortable and getting the correct aftercare advice. Nonetheless, we always recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before scheduling your sugaring appointment, as every pregnancy is different. Once you have approval from your doctor, we'll ensure that your sugaring experience is as comfortable and relaxing as possible.
-
Is sugaring vegan?Yes, our sugaring treatments are completely vegan. We use products that are free from animal-derived ingredients, ensuring they align with vegan standards. Additionally, we are committed to environmental sustainability, so you can feel good about choosing our services not only for their vegan credentials but also for their minimal ecological footprint.

Why does sugaring result in less in-growns?Sugaring results in fewer ingrown hairs due to its gentle technique of hair removal. The natural sugaring paste adheres only to the hair and dead skin cells rather than live skin cells, which means it exfoliates the skin while removing hair. This exfoliation helps prevent the pore blockage that can lead to ingrown hairs. Additionally, sugaring removes hair in the direction of growth (the opposite to waxing), which decreases the likelihood of hair breakage beneath the skin—a common cause of ingrown hairs. The combination of these factors contributes to a smoother skin surface and reduces the incidence of ingrown hairs compared to other hair removal methods. The risk of in-growns with any hair removal treatment is not zero, therefore, it is important to follow our aftercare advice to minimise the risk even further.
-
How long should I leave between appointments? The ideal time to leave between sugaring appointments is typically 4-6 weeks. This allows the hair to reach the optimal length for effective removal by sugaring, which is capable of removing shorter hairs than waxing. The exact interval might vary depending on individual hair growth cycles. By waiting for the right length, sugaring treatments can be more efficient and effective, often resulting in smoother results for a longer period compared to other treatments such as waxing.
-
Can I get sugared with sensitive skin?Absolutely, sugaring with our specially formulated paste, which includes glucose, fructose, and water, is suitable for individuals with sensitive skin. In fact many clients who have switched to us from waxing have done so because of reactions to salon wax. The absence of lemon juice in our paste makes it even less acidic than traditional sugaring formulas, further minimising the potential for skin irritation. This gentler approach ensures that the sugaring process is as kind to your skin as possible, reducing the risk of reactions and making it an excellent choice for those with sensitivities. If you have particular skin concerns, we recommend discussing them with us prior to your appointment to ensure the best care.
-
Can I get my beard sugared? No. Beard hairs are typically more deeply rooted and denser than hair on other parts of the body, making sugaring an unsuitable and potentially highly uncomfortable method for beard removal. This approach could lead to increased irritation and discomfort due to the strength and structure of beard hair follicles - potentially leading to permanent damage. For facial hair removal or grooming, other methods are more appropriate and effective.
-
Do you sugar the male intimate area?At the moment, we do not offer sugaring services for the penis or scrotum. This will change in the future. What we mean by "male intimate" and "female intimate" area is contained within our Gender Policy.

What's the difference between a Brazilian, Hollywood & Extended Bikini? When it comes to sugaring treatments for the bikini area, we offer several options to cater to your individual preferences: Brazilian: This popular choice removes most of the hair from the pubic region, including the front, labia, and back (around the anus), but typically leaves a small strip or shape of hair at the front. Hollywood: The most popular intimate treatment and for those who prefer a completely hair-free look, the Hollywood removes all hair from the entire pubic area, front to back including pubic mound, labia and anus. Extended Bikini: A more thorough option than the classic bikini line treatment, the Extended Bikini removes hair from the sides going further inwards than a traditional bikini line treatment but does not involve hair removal from the majority of labia or back. Each of these treatments caters to different personal preferences and comfort levels, offering varying degrees of hair removal to suit individual needs.
